: August 29
Destination of the Day: Slovakia celebrates its National Uprising Day, honoring the Slovak heroes who commanded in 1944 an uprising to repel the Nazi invaders.
This is a national holiday where flower wreaths are placed at the Slovak National Uprising Memorial in the city of Bratislava. Other important celebrations take place in the city of Banská Bystrica, which is known for having been the center of the resistance. The rebels, outnumbered by the Germans, fought against the invading forces until October 1944 when the Nazis took over Banská Bystrica and captured an important number of rebels and leaders. Although the rebels were defeated in a few weeks, the Slovak underground resistance movement continued until 1945 when the country was occupied by the Soviet Union. At the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising (http://www.muzeumsnp.sk
) you can visit and learn about this critical time in history.
